INTRODUCTION OF TON DUC THANG MUSEUM
On the occasion of the 100th birthday-anniversary of President Ton Duc Thang (20/08/1888 – 20/08/1988), Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Committee promulgated Decision No. 86/QĐ-UB to found “The Exhibition House on President Ton Duc Thang’s life and career” located at No. 5, Ton Duc Thang street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. After that, on the date of 13 August 1990, the Ministry of Culture – Information – Sports and Tourism promulgated Decision No. 894/QĐ to change its name into “Ton Duc Thang Museum”. This is one of the two celebrities commemorative museums of our country. This is confirmed in Document No. 128-CV/TƯ dated 16 September 1998 by Standing Committee of Ministry of Politics of Vietnam Party’s Central Committee. It is clearly stated that “Beside the two museums of Ho Chi Minh Museum and Ton Duc Thang Museum which have been in operation, no museum on other revolutionary celebrities is mentioned.”
The coming into being of Ton Duc Thang Museum aims to meet the aspiration and demand of understanding, studying and learning Uncle Ton of the country’s people in general, the Southern people in particular and especially the people in Ho Chi Minh City. The reason is that Uncle Ton, the eminent son of the Southern people, the excellent worker of the working class and the labor-force of Sai Gon – Cho Lon, is the example, the pride of solid southern people. Furthermore, Ton Duc Thang Museum located in Ho Chi Minh City bears a special meaning for the struggling movement of Saigonese workers, laboring people in the beginning years of the XX century when the Vietnamese Communist Party did not come into being always integrates with the name Ton Duc Thang – the co-founder of the secret union organization.
Being an agency of scientific research, Ton Duc Thang Museum has the duties to: research, collect, inventory, preserve, display and make known the revolutionary life and career of Uncle Ton, the sentiments of the people from all over the country and the world towards him. Nowadays, this Museum is the only place in the country to fairly fully and systematically introduce about President Ton Duc Thang. On this ground, with the system of 7 permanent exhibition rooms and 1 special short-term exhibition rooms at the Museum, at the vestiges relating to Uncle Ton and through the mass media, Ton Duc Thang Museum has contributed its voice in the front of ideology, culture, traditional education, ideal improvement for the working class, enhancing the national pride in the people and Vietnamese youth with the admiration and honor toward a great but simple man.
